Oral Hygiene Tip of the Month – April

Should I use a mouthwash or should I not? This is a very common question amongst patients and we have some information for you.

To rinse or not to rinse..? One of the most frequently asked questions from our patients – is whether they should be using mouthwash on a daily basis? Some benefits of using a mouthwash include:

  • Fresher breath
  • Increase in fluoride exposure (which may help with prevention of dental decay)
  • A reduction in bacteria and dental plaque (which are contributing factors of dental decay & gum disease)

Before using a mouthwash, it is important to know what you need it for? Every mouthwash has a range of different active ingredients and different indications of use. Speak to your dental health professional prior and identify the dental risk’s that may apply to you. Not only will this allow you to select the right product for the job – but ensure you get your money’s worth from that 30second rinse effect! It is important to know that mouthwash should NEVER be used as the only aspect of your oral hygiene routine. If required, it should be used in conjunction with your brushing & flossing routine!
